Is using abbreviations and acronyms on your blog a good idea? It appears that in many situations it is not. What would seem to be obvious to us, might not be as clear to others. Even in the blogosphere, bloggers tend to use abbreviations to describe the companies or programs that are popular among us. However, I strongly advise against doing so before it gets out of control. If you play online games and stumble upon one of their forums, you will notice loads of abbreviations that will be hard to understand for an average person. Unless you have played the game for many hours, you are doomed not to understand most of the messages on the forum. The same thing starts happening in the blogosphere. I think that many bloggers assume that mostly other bloggers visit our sites. While this might be true in some cases, what about those who are relatively new to our niche? Will they understand what we are talking about? When you plan to use an abbreviation, try to explain in other words what you wanted to say.
A good idea is to also have a small dictionary of abbreviations that you choose to use. By checking out this dictionary your readers will be able to understand some abbreviations or acronyms that you used in your post or posts. You can link to that dictionary from your homepage, and this way your site is not only going to attract experts, but also anyone new to the topics presented on your site.
