Readers Unsubscribing from RSS

Having a lot of RSS subscribers is a sign that your blog is successful, and it should be every blogger’s goal to have a lot of subscribers. It is not easy to attract new readers and subscribers; however, I wanted to share with you my thoughts about the subject why readers unsubscribe from RSS:

  • Various feed errors might force a reader to unsubscribe. Personally, I am often using the services of FeedBurner, and I trust that there are no errors. Using a reliable service is a must. It might be a good idea to check from time to time whether there are any feed errors by subscribing to your own RSS feed.
  • Change of blogger happens when a blog is sold and when there is a new owner. In such a case readers might unsubscribe as they might not like the writing style of the new writer. Such risk should be taken into account.
  • Too many posts that are too long. It depends of the niche and readers I suspect, but I know that many visitors like concise posts, especially those who don’t have a lot of time.
  • Off-topic posting is another major reason why people unsubscribe. Changing the topic of your blog rapidly, for example, from a blog about movies to a personal blog/diary might alienate the subscribers. Try to stick with the topic of your blog.
