Online Office Suites
Posted by Kent in Internet, Technology on October 27th, 2009
A certain study concluded that about 75% of US citizens never heard of online office suites. This might change with the recent introduction of Microsoft Office Live workspace. This is a free web based service, which acts like a central hub for home users and teams to upload and share documents. While bigger companies that have a lot of money to spend on servers or group software might not benefit from Office Live workspace, it is quite clear that this will be a very useful tool for an average Internet user. You will still be required to have Office’s desktop software components to be installed in order to perform any editing, but it will not be a problem if you have Office installed. A plug-in for Office 2003 and 2007 is provided for Windows that allows smooth interaction with workspaces and files.
I am certain that bloggers can benefit from such tools, because this way they can work on their articles from almost any location. You could even visit an Internet cafe to write and publish a few posts. After all, Office provides more flexibility when it comes to editing documents compared to other text editors, including a powerful spell checker and formatting options. Even thought it will cost you some money, the fact that you will save a lot of time by utilizing many features of Office means that it might be worth the investment.
Affiliate Plug-in for WordPress
Posted by Kent in Blogs, Internet, Technology on October 27th, 2009
There is an interesting plug-in I would like to present to you. First of all, this plug-in allows webmasters to monetize traffic by taking the keyword that a visitor used to find the site in any major search engine, and turns it into an affiliate link. This will not only save you a lot of time, but also bring you money. If you refer people to Amazon or eBay, then this plug-in will be especially useful.
Naturally, you can also customize the link to go anywhere including your site search page if you do not want to sell products. It is hard to obtain a lot of traffic, and if a website achieves that it means that the webmaster put a lot of work into it. That is why I believe that such webmasters deserve to monetize their site if they have a chance. While this plug-in will not automatically generate income for you, it is a great way to get credit for future purchases your visitors will make. You can check it out by visiting the following page: blogstorm.co.uk/automatic-keyword-inserting-affiliate-plugin-for-wordpress. Even if you are not interested in affiliate marketing, you have to admit that the way this plug-in works is very interesting.
Use Of Custom Fields In WordPress
Posted by Kent in Blogs, Internet, Technology on October 24th, 2009
Custom fields are a feature in WordPress that you can use to automate some things when creating a post. This allows you to add content at the end of your post without having to write it/include it manually each time. Here are examples what you can do with the help of custom fields:
Gravatars

Since comments are considered to be beneficial to a blog, then not surprisingly people are looking for ways to encourage others to leave comments. One way to do it is to use Gravatars. Gravatars are simply avatars that are created for every person who leaves a comment on your blog. Since WordPress 2.5 Gravatars are integrated into the default installation, it eliminates the need for any plug-ins. Before WordPress 2.5 webmasters had to actually install a plug-in to take advantage out of this useful feature. If you are wondering why they are called Gravatars let me tell you that it is an abbreviation from Globally Recognized Avatars. What is nice about them, is that each Gravatar is rated with an MPAA-style age recommendation, which allows webmasters some control. So, for example, if you do not want on your site any gravatars that feature nudity, you will be able to specify it. On the other hand, you also have the freedom to allow such gravatars if for some reason you want them on your blog. I imagine that blogs which have visitors from all demographics will want to block those gravatars that are more controversial. An important thing that I did not mention yet is that using gravatars can be a lot of fun!
Website Design

You might want to consider being a website designer If you like working on your blog’s theme, and you are pretty good at it. One of the ways that many people decide to make money is by website design. Designing websites often does not require face-to-face contact , and in turn it is possible to work online. I often discuss different aspects of blogging on this site, but this time for those who are considering pursuing their career as a website designer I want to offer some advice.
1. Communication is a very important aspect. This is especially true when it comes to working online. You need to know what your client wants, and how he want this to be done. You also need to know to ask the right questions to receive the answers you need.
2. Customers often do not know what is best. Not everyone is an expert, so you might need to make some decisions yourself even about some key aspects.
3. You are not your own boss. Many people are fascinated by the idea of being their own boss, but if you have a client which has a lot of requirements, then he is taking the role of your boss. Of course, you are a boss in a sense that you decide whether to take an offer or not.
Adding a Favicon to Your Blog
Posted by Kent in Blogs, Internet, Technology on October 20th, 2009
What is a favicon? The name refers to an icon file (.ico), usually named favicon.ico. It is displayed on the favorites menu in web browsers when you create a shortcut to a web page. When you use a Favicon the first thing your visitor notices is your chosen logo displayed next to your URL in the browser’s address bar, instead of the standard icon. Favicon is also shown wherever the shortcut to a site appears. I think that we can draw a conclusion that having a favicon on your website allows your visitors to quickly identify your site in their favorite folder among all other bookmarked sites. If you are interested in adding a favicon to your WordPress template, here is all you have to do:
1. Choose any non-copyrighted image you like.
2. Visit www.html-kit.com/favicon for tools to create your favicon.
3. Upload your image and click on “Generate Favicon”.
4. If you are happy how your favicon looks in the preview, download it to your hard drive.
5. Upload your favicon to your webhost.
6. Edit the header in your template (between <head> and </head>) to add the following line:
<link rel=”shortcut icon” href=”favicon.ico” >. Save the file.
If this does not work, you might need to specify the full path to your favicon.ico file something like this “http://www.yoursite.com/folder1/folder2/favicon2.ico”.
7. In case of having problems use the validator (www.html-kit.com/favicon/validator) to diagnose the problem, or make a comment here, and I may be able to help you. Good luck!
Blocking Pop Ups
Posted by Kent in Internet, Technology on October 16th, 2009
Advertisers seem to never give up. They constantly bombard us with ads everywhere we go. Fortunately, there are at least a few ways to block unwanted pop ups on the Internet. Choose one or more from the following options:
Firefox Too Popular?
Posted by Kent in Internet, Technology on October 16th, 2009
Generally speaking, software developers hope that their software is going to be very popular, and that people from all countries of the world are going to download it. The question what I want to ask is whether can a software be too popular? I think that it can be too popular in a sense if the download servers are not operational, and overloaded by download requests. While this does not happen that often, there were such cases reported such as the launch of Firefox 3 last year. Millions of downloads are sometimes too much to handle, so we should be careful for what we wish for.
The release of Firefox 3 was very important, because more and more users switch to Firefox, and for a long time I did not read an article stating the superiority of Internet Explorer over Firefox, but rather quite the opposite. Of course, there is also the Opera Browser, which according to a lot of users is a feature-rich browser. However, most users use Firefox on a daily basis. Firefox 3, among other things, offers significantly improved speed and memory usage. The list of improvements is actually quite long and is around 15,000 different things. This is an exciting time for those who use Firefox, but if any of you wanted to try Firefox for the first time, this may be a good occasion.
Ranks
Posted by Kent in Internet, Technology on October 15th, 2009
Want to show the others the popularity of your blog? Would you like to let your visitors know how high is your Google Page Rank? How about Alexa Rank, number of Google and Yahoo backlinks to your blog, as well as other statistics? Finally, do you want to measure your own progress with your blog? I love numbers, calculating, statistics, and everything related to it. It gives me a lot of pleasure to analyze the data concerning my blog, not mentioning that it can help you analyze what kind of weakness your blog might have. I also like to see my progress displayed in numbers.
Some time ago, I came across Popuri.us, which is a site that displays 12 ranks on one screen – numbers that display the value of your blog. Those include PR, Alexa Rank, Compete Rank, Quantcast Rank, Google & Yahoo backlinks, Technorati links, and even Bloglines subscribers, as well as WHOIS. It is the best site of this type that I have found, because you can access all of those ranks just by visiting one site. While not all of the ranks might be equally important, I believe that seeing how your website performs according to many ranks can be beneficial for many reasons.
Dead Links Elimination
Posted by Kent in Internet, Technology on October 15th, 2009
Having a blog for a long time means that the website grows bigger and bigger. Not only that we have more and more posts, but often various static pages are also added. The number of links on our site is constantly growing, and this also includes links to other blogs or sites. In such a case it is not a surprise that sometimes our websites accumulate a certain amount of dead links. A dead link is basically a link on the site that points to a website that is permanently unavailable. If you want to be sure your site does not contain any dead links visit a site like dead-links.com that contains a handy tool that can display all the dead links on your site. The way it works is that a bot is going to spider your site and visit all of the links, including any internal and external links. You will be presented with a report showing all the bad links found, so you will be able to eliminate those links which no longer serve their purpose.
From a SEO perspective, eliminating dead links can increase the value of your own pages. That is because there will be less links pointing to different domains, and more links pointing to your own domain.
