Backing up Your Blog’s Database
Posted by Kent in Blogs, Internet, Technology on October 11th, 2010
Some time ago I was discussing backing up blogs. However, an integral part of a blog that I did not discuss is the blog’s database. Basically, if you forget to back up your blogs database, then you are going to lose a number of important elements of your blog, including your blog posts, comments, and data generated by different plug-ins. So in a sense, your database is more important then your blogs template files, as they are more easy to substitute.
To back up your database use the MySQL database administrative tool provided by your webhost, or in case of WordPress blogs use an appropriate plug-in such as “WordPress Database Backup”. This plug-in is a personal favorite of mine, as it is easy to install and has very neat features. Backup options include saving to server, downloading to your computer, and emailing the database to your email. Perhaps the most useful feature is scheduled backup that allows you to set-up the plug-in in a way that it will automatically perform scheduled backups and email your backup to a chosen email. Setting for a daily schedule will ensure that no important data will be lost, however, the weekly schedule might be more reasonable.
If you value the content of your blog, you should take some measures to ensure that your database will not be lost. It is a good idea to both manually and automatically backup your database. This way you will be sure that you will not lose any important data.
Viruses and Malware
Posted by Kent in Internet, Technology on September 25th, 2010
Viruses and malware are a real danger for anyone who connects to the Internet on a regular basis. The biggest chance of infecting a computer with a virus is when you download something from the Internet. Some people might think that if they do not download anything, then their computer will never get infected. However, it is important to understand that while you surf the Web there are hundreds of files that need downloading. Whenever you visit a particular page it is actually downloading to your computer. This means that even if you simply browse various sites without downloading any files, there is still a chance of infecting your computer. It is important to get virus protection if you want to be protected from various threats. While many people say that no particular program can protect from all viruses and malware, the truth is that it is a lot safer to have an antivirus installed rather than not have one installed. Antivirus programs are able to protect from most threats and that is why it is recommended not to connect to the Internet without any firewall or antivirus being installed. It might be even possible to get free virus protection if you look around.
Digg vs. Bookmarking
Posted by Kent in Internet, Technology on September 17th, 2010
There are different ways to promote your posts, and this includes submitting to sites like Digg, or to bookmarking sites like Delicious. If your post is popular enough, it can reach the front page of either Digg or Delicious. The question is which website can be more beneficial to your blog. After researching the topic, I believe that bookmarking websites like Delicious can be an ever better choice than Digg. First of all, if a person bookmarks your post or website, there is a big chance he will visit your site more than just once. This is the main advantage of bookmarking sites. On the other hand, people usually visit your post though Digg only once. Secondly, there is a link value associated with Delicious, as each link pointing to your website is a targeted link. This should benefit your SEO greatly so do not underestimate it. They are even more targeted if relevant tags are added. I am not saying not to use Digg, but I am saying to appreciate bookmarking sites more, as they can be really beneficial. Naturally, there are many ways to attract traffic and work on SEO, so do not limit yourself only to Digg or bookmarking sites.
Submission to Directories
Posted by Kent in Internet, Technology on August 4th, 2010
In the past, I have written about the importance of including your website/blog in directories to improve your Page Rank ranking and increase search engine results. Submitting your website to directories is important because directories usually have high PR themselves, and being linked from such sites will boost your overall website ranking.
Personally, I also believe that including your website in directories might be a lot more efficient than manually exchanging links with other websites, as from experience I can say that many people do not respond at all to link exchange requests. They do not respond for many reasons, including lack of willingness to exchange links with anybody at the moment, or they might simply not like something about your website. On the other hand, directories are overall more professional, as they are always ready to link to other sites. Additionally, they usually they have very specific requirements when it comes to the inclusion of your website. Even if you have a lot of link exchanges you are still going to benefit from listing your site with directories.
It is important to understand that the importance and prestige of directories differs a lot, so make sure that you focus on adding your website to the more important ones. If you put a little bit of effort into being listed, I am sure it will pay off later. Of course, submitting your website to lesser known directories might not be as beneficial.
The Growth of Blogging
Posted by Kent in Blogs, Internet, Technology on July 15th, 2010
Some time ago, I read an article about blogging and there were some interesting numbers listed there. The article stated that Technorati, a search engine that monitors blogs, indexed around 150 million blogs, up from 100,000 just a few years ago. It seems that a new blog is created every few seconds, which adds up to thousands new blogs a day, hundreds of thousands of posts a day, and thousands of updates an hour. As you see, the growth rate of blogs is really impressive. But what are really blogs? I think that blogs are lowering the cost of publishing, enabling the rise of content, which is replacing the centralized, controlled content done by professionals. I am not saying that some bloggers do not go pro, but most bloggers are only blogging part-time. Blogs are becoming more and more popular with each passing day. One of the reasons is that very often bloggers allow their visitors to ask them questions, leave comments, etc. A user that visits a blog can actually interact with the writer and that is not possible in case of newspapers.
The article had the conclusion that blogging is still in its early days and it is analogous to where the Web was in 1995 and 1996, so it is not clear how it will turn out. However, as a blogger myself, I am predicting that the popularity of blogging will not cease to grow and some bloggers will become even more influential.
Printers
Posted by Kent in Technology on July 13th, 2010
Printers require many things in order to work properly. Buying a printer is usually not enough, as you will additionally need toner cartridges, or copier toners. Many situations might require people to print something. It can be some kind of document, picture, article, website, PowerPoint presentation, or anything else. I would also like to mention that most companies need a reliable printer and a supply of inkjet and toner cartridges for many purposes. Since there is such a big need for inkjet and toner cartridges, it is important to choose the right cartridge for a printer. Additionally, you want to purchase them from a trusted source. There are many Internet users that claim that you can purchase cartridges at a low price on the Internet. You might even be able to purchase printer accessories for many brands of printers without any problems. Of course, it is important to be able to find a place where prices are very competitive. I am always open to suggestions where to find good deals so feel free to leave a comment if you would like to share your opinion on the subject. Many people use printers a lot so I know they would appreciate some good advice.
Search Engines
Posted by Kent in General, Technology on May 26th, 2010
There are more than a hundred million websites on the Internet. Some websites on the Internet are more useful to people than others are. For example, a pdf search enables Internet users to look for any ebook they might wish to find. Some people who like ebooks may be only interested in sites that host them. On the other hand, someone who likes listening to music may be only interested in sites that host music files. Many search engines are easy to use and very convenient in various situations. They allow people to browse through thousands of websites or files that are hosted worldwide. There are some sites that allow a person to look for an ebook by either entering a title, author, country, or episode. In case you do not know how to start your search, you can simply write whatever you want in the search field. It is as easy as that so feel free to get started.
Do-Follow
Posted by Kent in Blogs, Internet, Technology on April 6th, 2010
There are many blogs, which have a do-follow policy. In other words, unless a comment is a spam that will be deleted by Akismet in the first place, every person leaving a comment will get a free linkback to such a site. Such link will be detectable by Google spiders, contrary to a “nofollow” link. People often decide to have a do-follow blog as they predict that maintaining this policy will attract more visitors to their website. However, recently I started noticing that some do-follow blogs, especially those with relatively high PR go back to being non-follow. They simply get tired of people abusing the whole system. This is especially true now, when some bloggers buy comments that are difficult to spot as spam. Of course, even if somebody is going to abuse it, there will be still bloggers which will benefit from their site being do-follow. Some are afraid of spammers, but Akismet is already doing a great job filtering spam. When it comes to comments that are not of a high quality and would be suspicious, they can always be deleted manually, and thus preventing the spammer from any further spamming. Whatever you decide, it is really your choice, but remember that you should be making decisions which are beneficial to your blog and to your readers.
Before Buying a Printer
Posted by Kent in General, Technology on April 1st, 2010
Before you buy a printer, you might need to ask yourself a few important questions. There is no point believing that once you have a printer, you have already everything you need to start printing things immediately. Not so fast. You need to take time to realize that you need something more than a printer. You will also need some cheap printer ink that will allow you to print anything you want. When you buy a new printer, you might realize that some ink comes for free with a new printer. It will last only for some time though. It is in your best interest to make sure that you find a place that can supply you with cheap ink. Ink will always be a long-term expense of your printer, no matter what you try to do about it. Try to buy some ink as soon as you buy your printer. Do not leave purchasing it for later. It is always a good idea to have some ink prepared in advance. If you run out of ink, you might be in a hurry to buy it and you might make a hasty decision. It is often wiser to buy a more expensive printer that uses cheap ink than a cheap printer that uses ink that is more expensive.
Metal and Steel
Posted by Kent in General, Technology on April 1st, 2010
Our lives would not be the same if we did not use materials such as metal and steel. While we might not realize it, a lot of things that we take for granted would not exist without metal and steel. Look around your apartment and try to list a few things that are made out of such materials. Can you name a few? I am sure you can. While metals are not something a typical person has on his mind, there are many companies that require high quality metals in order to operate. Do you know what is expanded metal mesh? It is an expanded metal with ventilation properties that has a diamond pattern. I am sure you have seen such metal mesh in various places. Anyway, it has to to say how our lives would look like without any access to metals. It would be very difficult to create various constructions and our society would be completely different. While there is a group of people that praises how life looked like before the industrial revolution, I am sure that most people appreciate that our progress in technology resulted in so many applications of metal in our modern lives.
