Learn from Magazines

There are some bloggers who believe that reading and actively analyzing a magazine might be of great help to improve the overall quality of a blog. It is an interesting idea so I wanted to share my thoughts about it. The idea basically comes from the fact that a blog in many ways resembles a magazine. You can get a lot of ideas by reviewing a magazine:

• Ideas for marketing. How is the magazine advertising?
• Ideas for blog design. Magazines also have to decide how each page is going to look like.
• Ideas for a post. Posts are similar to articles in a magazine. What kind of articles does the magazine have?
• Writing style tips. You can simply learn by reading.
• Learn about your niche. Read magazines which are on the same topic as your blog.

As you see, there are many ideas you can get by reading a magazine. Of course, you might want to apply the same principle to other successful blogs, and learn from them as well. Many of us do it without even realizing it. Anyway, reading high quality magazines, especially those that are in the same niche as your website, can greatly enhance the quality of your blog.

Draw Traffic to Your Website

Do you want to draw traffic to your website? Bloggers and webmasters from all around the world have the same goals. Everybody wants to have the best website on the Internet, write the best blog posts, and attract the most traffic possible. Attracting traffic is an important thing if you want to be a popular blogger, and if you are serious about what you are doing. Below you will find some ideas on how you can attract more visitors to your website or blog:

1. Visit and comment on other people’s blogs. My experience tells me, that the best idea is not only to comment on very popular blogs, but also on those that do not receive a lot of traffic and comments. If you visit and comment on a blog where few people leave feedback, the author of such a blog will probably be grateful to you. Chances are high that he will return the favor and visit your blog as well.
2. Post on the message boards of the blogging community you belong to. Be active, and you will easily obtain new readers. Make sure that your signature contains a link to your website.
3. Submit your blog to as many directories as possible. Submitting your blog to directories will also increase your site’s Page Rank. Increasing your site’s Page Rank will in turn result in receiving more visitors.
4. Use accurate keywords in your blog description. This will help you being listed in Google results whenever someone will search for related terms. Received organic traffic is a very cost-effective solution.

Redirecting Affiliate Links

When it comes to the Internet community, redirecting is usually associated with something deceitful. However, I am going to show you in this post that it does not have to be. An example would be a person redirecting one webpage to another in order to trick someone that his site has a high Alexa or Page Rank score. Such behavior is not ethical, but you cannot blame a tool for improper use, so it does not mean that there are no better ways to use redirecting. One of the proper ways you can use redirecting is to redirect affiliate links. You can do this for at least two reasons:

  • Looks. Some links are very long and that is why websites like “tinyurl.com” thrive. Long links are often hard to remember, and that is why your visitors will appreciate the fact that you are shortening them. Generally speaking, using short links can be highly beneficial. They are definitely easier to remember and that can be quite important.
  • Convenience when things change. Let us say your affiliate link changes. If you are not redirecting your links, then you have to manually change it in many places. On the other hand, if you are redirecting then you simply need to change the affiliate URL in one file. I think this is the main advantage of redirecting affiliate links. This could literally save you hours if you have many affiliate links, especially those buried under newer content. Most affiliate marketers would benefit from using redirects.
  • Ultimately, it is up to you whether you will decide to redirect your affiliate links so remember to take into account both advantages and disadvantages. As you see, there is definitely a legitimate use for redirecting links.

    Topic of Your Blog

Do you want to blog about your personal life or blog about the subject you love? Maybe you always wanted to blog about space travel or about cooking? Choosing the topic of your blog is not easy, so here is some information how to choose it wisely, so that you will not regret it later:

  • While choosing a topic for your blog think of something that people might be interested in reading about. Maybe your hobby is meteorology, but will you find enough readers interested in the topic? Will you be satisfied with the amount of traffic coming to your site? After all, having many visitors can give a lot of satisfaction. There are many things people are interested about so you will not be as restricted as you might think.
  • Is there a big competition in the niche you want to blog about? Try to choose a niche where there are not already thousands of blogs competing with each other. Choosing the right niche is very important, so choose wisely.
  • Consider blogging about your everyday life a bit and about yourself. Believe me, people enjoy reading the biographies of other bloggers. That can be quite addictive, especially if you read about someone interesting. Having said that, writing about personal matters might not fit all blogs like, for example, websites of businesses.
  • Have fun with writing articles about the chosen topic. Do not choose to blog about something that you do not like, as after some time you might simply give up.

    Proofreading Tips

Making sure your articles do not have any typos and mistakes is not only important, but will make your blog look more professional. Here are some proofreading tips that should help you accomplish that:

  • Use a spellchecker. I think that this is the most important point, as a good spellchecker can spot most mistakes. Spellcheckers such as those incorporated in Firefox or Microsoft Word are very popular. However, they will not detect all mistakes so take that into account. You cannot only rely on a spellchecker to spot mistakes.
  • Whenever you write, try to be rested and relaxed. Concentrated on what you are doing and make sure nothing is distracting you. To work the most efficient way you should get rid of potential distractions, as it is hard to work when a person is getting distracted or interrupted. Switch off your cell phone if that is possible.
  • Try to spot mistakes that a spellchecker is not able to detect such as homonyms, which are words that share the same spelling or pronunciation, but have different meanings. Such mistakes are very common and spellcheckers will not be able to spot them.
  • Get someone else to proofread your posts. This is a very effective way to ensure that all mistakes will be found, but it might not always be possible. Try asking your friends whether they could visit your blog and spot any mistakes. You may even ask your readers to do so and offer them some incentive. Makes sure to reward them in some way.

    Page Rank Prediction Tools

Page Rank is considered as one of the most important ranks on the Internet. I am usually skeptical when a website claims that it can predict future Page Rank. I think that it is a reasonable approach taking into account the available data. Very often PR prediction tools will inaccurately predict that Page Rank will go up or down, even if that would be obvious to a regular webmaster. For example, there are many cases where such PR prediction tools predict that a site with one backlink will receive a Page Rank of 8-10 in the next update. Such predictions are quite ridiculous, as it is even very hard to achieve a PR of 5.

From my personal experience, the PR prediction tools did not work well with most websites. I think the reason for this is that Google changes its algorithm constantly. Additionally, even if Google would not change it anymore, right now it is so complex that I do not think any program can really predict a Page Rank change accurately. Of course, I am not claiming it does not work at all – surely there has been work put into such tools. Nonetheless, I think we should not depend on them too much or we might get disappointed. Maybe in the future they will be more reliable, but right now I would not depend on them. If you want to maximize the chance of your PR growing on the next PR update, then make sure that many important websites are linking to you.

    Personalize Your Theme

WordPress is one of the most popular blogging platforms in the world. There are thousands of WordPress themes available on the Internet and most of them are free. New themes come out on a daily basis. Even though there are so many themes, people might often prefer to use a popular, well documented one. For example, my blog uses a quite popular theme, for which there are a lot of guides, even though not that often I see a blog with an identical theme to mine. I decided to use it, because I like the way it looks, but I also knew that I will not need to worry about potential problems. That is because this theme stood the test of time. On the other hand, I decided to make my theme look a little different by personalizing it. This way I have a high quality theme, a well documented one, and additionally one that looks original. I made some changes to the style sheet file and rearranged a couple of things. It is not that hard to make such changes, so feel free to try it out yourself. You do not have to start by making any drastic changes, as even changing the style and size of font is some kind of change that will make your blog look more original.

Naturally, WordPress themes are not the only themes that can be modified. You can modify any theme you wish provided that you know some basic html and php.

    Backing up Your Blog

Most responsible webmasters back up their blog from time to time. They understand that you never know what might happen. I think that most bloggers should probably back up their blog more often then they do. Anyway, the frequency of making backup is not what I wanted to discuss in this post. On the other hand, I want to explain some fundamental rules when it comes to backup. In particular, I want to say what you need to back up when it comes to your blog. In this case I will use a WordPress blog as an example:

  • Your blog’s core files. Those are the files that are located on the server after your WordPress installation is finished. They might get corrupted, and backing up those files will ensure that you will be able to restore your blog easily. If you make any changes to those files, you will definitely want to back them up. Simply copy them to your hard drive and upload them if the files on the hosting server get corrupted.
  • Your blog’s theme. This includes all modifications you made. Some bloggers put more work into their theme than others. However, even if you only made a few changes to your theme, it is crucial that you have a backup.
  • Your blog’s plug-ins that you installed that are enabled or disabled. Finding the right plug-ins is time consuming, so you do not want them to get lost or corrupted. At least make a list of all plug-ins you have installed.
  • Images and files that are uploaded to your blog.

    Color of Text

While the content of the website is the most important thing, it does not mean that a webmaster should not take some time to make his website look very well. There are many things a webmaster can do to make a website look more professional.

I would like to give some pointers when it comes to the color of text on websites. This is one of the most basic decisions any webmaster has to make at some point. First of all, generally the color should be easily visible and suited to the background to ensure that visitors will not have a hard time reading text. Most pages use white background, and if that is the case black color of text fits perfectly. The general guideline is to try to use the opposite color of font compared to the background, such as black and white. I understand that some people might really want a pink or any other colorful font, but a blog should serve a purpose of delivering your opinions across. If the text is unreadable, then this is not going to be achieved easily. You should only use some “exotic” color if your website does not contain a lot of text, but other elements such as images or videos. However, if most of the content on your blog is text, then you should focus to make your blog accessible to your readers. You can easily recognize if a blog has done a good job when it comes to text color, just by looking at it for a few seconds.
